In many countries, businesses have to deal with the demand for gifts or bribe if they have to ‘get things done’. Businesses on many occasions succumb to these demands that allows the cycle of corruption to continue.

Enterprises Surveys is a World bank venture that undertakes surveys on certain topics relevant to the private sector. Data is collected from face-to-face interviews with top managers and business owners in over 130,000 companies in 135 economies. The survey with corruption parameter focuses on informal payments, gift for tax officials and to secure contracts, licenses and connections for electricity or water.

Some of the countries with the highest demand for bribes in relation to public transactions are Cambodia, Yemen, Pakistan, Guinea.The survey fails to capture information about bribes paid by companies. The International Bribe Payers Index from Transparency International, the global movement against corruption reveals that companies in many instances pay bribe for ‘getting things done’ especially in foreign countries with weak governance. Most of the OECD countries including USA, UK, France are not listed in this survey, which is annually updated.
